Re: SI licences etc.

A couple of things: Regarding reselling Autodesk software, it seems like the result of the Vernor case is that Autodesk CAN prohibit someone from reselling their software. Also, be aware that if you don't already own a (commercial?) license of Softimage, you only have until March 27 (8 days from tod...

Re: What about Softimaging Blender? SoftBlender?

iamvfx, the visual keymap tool you're describing sounds great (I don't remember it in XSI - not sure that I ever used it, or if I have it's been a long time). If it's a clear improvement over what Blender currently has and is presented the right way, I am sure that the Blender community and develope...

Re: record live transition Q&A webinar?

Well, to be fair, he did say that there were more reasons than just that for why it would be difficult to open-source it. I don't remember them all, but the one that made sense to me were any third-party contributions. I don't know if this is the case for Softimage, but a lot of commercial software ...

Have they posted the rest of the webinar somewhere, or did the stream not crash for you? The original page still has the notice about them having technical difficulties.

Re: record live transition Q&A webinar?

The webinar stream crashed around half an hour or so into it. Now the page says that it's being recorded and that they will post the recording once it's finished.

Re: What about Softimaging Blender? SoftBlender?

Regarding Softimage keys in Blender, if they've done it for Max and Maya, it would just take someone to volunteer to do something similar for Softimage. This is where volunteers can help. Here's a message from Ton where he was looking for volunteers to maintain the Max and Maya presets: http://lists...

Re: What about Softimaging Blender? SoftBlender?

I understand what you're trying to say, but still: any implication that the whole of the Softimage community and/or more specifically this little si-community could have done more to prevent Softimages demise gets my goat. I was originally planning to write a lengthy reply about the communities inn...

Re: What about Softimaging Blender? SoftBlender?

Sorry you took it that way, Hirazi. It was not meant to be a cheap shot at all. It was just an honest question, and something I alluded to in one of my earlier posts: how much responsibility does a software community bear if a great software isn't as successful in the market as it should be? Is it a...

Re: What about Softimaging Blender? SoftBlender?

Whoah, iamvfx and luceric, two kinda extreme posts from you guys. Yes, some Blender fans can be insistent, sometimes strident, and give a negative impression. On the other hand, however, you can't just dismiss Blender's accomplishments. It's one of the more successful open-source projects after all,...

Re: What about Softimaging Blender? SoftBlender?

Draise, Cinderella was exactly the character I thought of in relation to Softimage when this news broke out. Except that without the happy ending. luceric, true, that's when I first bought XSI, Foundation 4.2. Then later I bought XSI Advanced 5.0 (Academic), when I enrolled in a college program on i...

Re: What about Softimaging Blender? SoftBlender?

Valid points, Luc. Open source software does have different philosophy, responsibilities, outlook, audience, and resources than commercial software. They only recently have reached 6 full-time developers, with I believe 4 or so more part-time ones. So you can see why they would want to prioritize on...

Re: What about Softimaging Blender? SoftBlender?

Sorry to be such a buzzkill: The Blender Foundation has so far successfully and blatantly ignored all cries for a workflow experience that better matches the rest of the industry (and has done so for many years), so what exactly makes you think you can convince them otherwise all of a sudden? Hi Hi...

Re: What about Softimaging Blender? SoftBlender?

Island, try the most recent versions, particularly the new 2.70 release candidate, which has a few new UI improvements. Also, consider doing some of the settings changes that some folks recommend to users of other software coming to Blender, like changing selection to left mouse, changing the viewpo...

Re: What about Softimaging Blender? SoftBlender?

The problem here would seem to be that the different parties in this (big studios/small shops/freelancers and the odd hobbyist) have very different concerns/goals/stakes in going forward. First time posting. Why do Softimage hobbyists have to be odd? It's the best 3D software, after all. ;) But I a...
