Re: why not cinema 4d?

I'm pretty sure this can't be done in modo as described. Although I'm a C4D user I used modo for a few years and was on their Beta testing testing team for a short stint. modo is very weak when it comes to non destructive stuff i.e. almost non existant apart from a few deformers.

Re: why not cinema 4d?

Re plugin compatibility. Many R12 plugins will work with R15. However it's pretty common for plugins to be version specific and only work for that version. If you're lucky the plugin developer will make a new version / recompile. Every few years Maxon will change the internal structure of Cinema 4D ...

Re: why not cinema 4d?

Another essential plugin is chamfer maker. This applies a non destructive edge bevel to edge selections. http://irisvfx.com/blog/addons/chamfer-maker-r15/ Another one is rBoole. Render time booleans. A common problem with animatable booleans is a visible popping / shading artifacts. You don't get th...

Re: why not cinema 4d?

Re Sphere segments etc. The only thing C4D hasn't got for this example is a thickness modifier / deformer. With a sphere primitive the radius and segments can be changed at any stage and can be animated. A couple of work arounds can be used to add thickness e.g. Boolean or my pick a Cloth object Bel...

Re: why not cinema 4d?

Q: is there a dedicated 'thickness' tool? The 'explode' tool you use in the second video looks a bit like a workaround. A: The C4D Extrude tool with the Caps option enabled is essentially a thickness tool. Does Softimage have a modelling guide / construction line system? C4D has an excellent guide ...

Re: why not cinema 4d?

Re the text example. C4D can do all that you mention except the outline. It can do an outline of the text spline but the text spline needs to be made editable first. You can't then change the font or the letters. You can however still change the extrusion amount, edge bevel etc as the editable text ...

Re: why not cinema 4d?

Re Construction history. My understanding of Construction History is way to to go back and change things on your model from an earlier time and not upset modelling actions that were done later. If that's the case then Cinema 4D has this with its primitive objects, spline primitives, MoGraph Cloner, ...

Re: why not cinema 4d?

Did I miss something or is there no Softimage retirement offer from Maxon? There is currently no deals being offered by Maxon for Softimage users. You're best bet is to download the demo, try out C4D and if you like it, haggle over the price with your local Maxon reseller. If you wait a couple of m...
