Re: YouTube: The Complicated Story of Softimage
there's an earlier video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T9zpXD1RNmg rumor had it that Avid was going to sell Softimage to Dassault Systeme (the aerospace company that also owned CATIA and Solidworks), and that a deal had all but been completed, and that some people from Autodesk had somehow bribed...

Re: Nice to be using Softimage again. But where is everyone now?
I'm still using Softimage, because there isn't anything else worth using (I use it mainly to model, with the occasional foray into particles). I have Houdini, but I haven't touched it in months. I also figured out how to turn a polygon object into a NURBS one without a plugin...though it's labor-int...

sorry for raising a dead thread, but I'm so glad I found this plugin. because the way Softimage makes primitve plugins is maddening.

Re: Unreal Studio to be free, Quixel free too acquired by Epic
adobe bought allegorithmic. so now they own substance painter. mixamo fuse was discontinued after being bought out. sorry I should've clarified. meanwhile, I have unreal studio...the latest version. it works fine once you get past the 'stuck at 45%' loading screen. there's also the twinmotion plugin...

...and now we have the big three of the media creation industry: maxon/red giant, foundry, and autodesk.

Re: Yeah!! Hail to Softimage, winner of three awards at VES ...
So if they were for sale how is Autodesk a vulture? you're KIDDING, right? Autodesk ALREADY had Maya from their purchase from SGI. They also ALREADY had 3DS max. They bought one of their competitors. In most jurisdictions, that's blatanltly illegal. but that's one another story for another post. I ...

Re: Yeah!! Hail to Softimage, winner of three awards at VES ...
regarding avid and sibelius...that explains everything. it seemed like Autodesk was acting the part of vultures in the 2000s. Maya was for sale. Softimage was for sale, as well as others. I guess that what happens when greed infests everything. it clouds the vision. As well as antitrust laws. but it...

did you try using an orientation node..like 'align to position'? that seems like it would work.

Re: Yeah!! Hail to Softimage, winner of three awards at VES ...
that wouldn't be the first time Avid did something stupid. Just a few years back, they acquired the company that made Sibelius, a great music notation software. The people that made Sibelius were fired soon after Sibelius was absorbed into Avid (to go with their ProTools line). Those people are NOW ...

it looks like most of it is being aimed at realtime engines like Unity and Unreal.
it's still a very interesting video, though.
thanks for the post.

Re: Unreal Studio to be free, Quixel free too acquired by Epic
all these mergers need to stop. now. what really needs to happen is people need to say something. Adobe has bought and discontinued quite a few companies over the past decade, including Substance Painter, Mixamo Fuse, and several others. They're just as rotten as Autodesk. Buying, for the sake of ha...
