Re: Softimage|WIKI - dead or alive?

I also have downloads of the wiki and some other pages.
I did some tests last year and got it kinda working, So putting it together properly and hosting is on my list of things for this year, if possible.

Re: Siggraph 2019

I think Autodesk have done alright here. Granted its taken them a while, but now they've got something out there, it will be interesting to see what happens. Having done many a roadmap presentation talking about this kind of stuff, I'm pleased to see it out there, so hats off to the devs. Am sure ma...

Re: Unreal Studio, Marc Petit

Much is workflow is similar to what we do previously when demoing Mudbox. You could take a mesh only, and dump it into Mudbox, then add some auto UVs (soft also has a similar feature, if I recall). The UVs will be ugly, and by no means as good as the result you would get it too the time to unwrap th...

Re: Unreal Studio, Marc Petit

I think I'll chime in here, because we've been working alot with Unreal on this and like Mackevision we've been using alot or the Datasmith workflow and plugins. It's too much of a sweeping statement to say Unreal Studio and its plugins are aimed at people who don't know how to make 3d models. My co...

Re: Autodesk to lay off a further 13% of its workforce

its a shame what's happened to Stingray(ala Bitsquid), but frankly I'm not surprised with what's been happening recently. I could understand why AD wanted a game engine. At the time we had a some good middleware solutions, but no end product that encapsulated them all. Unity and Unreal may have been...

Re: Autodesk to lay off a further 13% of its workforce

Autodesk (and their competitors) have been investing heavily in cloud over a multi year transition and now they're hoping to enter a growth phase (as their statement suggests). They probably staffed up heavily to do that in order to changed their systems and they also introduced alot of product at d...

Re: Mentalray EOL

By the way just wanted to see what Maya people are saying about this EoL, and.... they have nothing to say. One or zero reply on CG Talk or AD forum. I believed there must be good number of Mayans who just can't live without for any weird reason, but, nothing, like it never even existed. More comme...

Re: Mentalray EOL

Also, as a side note remember how painful it was to really render anything from ICE? My impression was more around 'limited by MR capabilities', somehow typical "can display in viewport, can not render'' for SI. For exact example, ICE was able to do a way more complex hair-strands structures t...

Re: Mentalray EOL

Well personally I think you're reading too much into things and overthinking stuff, especially with interpreting press releases. You're maybe giving people and AD way too much credit, lol. Fine. Mr. everything is fine ;) Well as someone who was actually there and inside the mothership, the truth is...

Re: Mentalray EOL

Indeed I know MPC was -mostly- using Maya, (as opposed to the rest of the shops mentionned which were moslty Softimage based including a bunch I left out like Hybirde etc..) but I put it in because there were (and possibly still is?) quite a few XSI (and ICE) users there (at least in Montreal), hea...

Re: Mentalray EOL

I don't really see any correlation between the Mental Ray EoL and Softimage EoL. That wasn't the point being made. It was that Mentalray obsolescence contributed to demise of Softimage in say the perid of ~2003 to ~2007. FxDude ICE appeared while Softimage was still with Avid. I'm not so sure about...

Re: Mentalray EOL

I don't really see any correlation between the Mental Ray EoL and Softimage EoL. Luc-Eric is right, much of the core evangelising for Softimage was around animation and pipeline. Everything else was really a bonus. It allowed us to position Softimage very well to Maya/Max people as an augmented solu...

Re: Mentalray EOL

MR was both a blessing and a curse for Softimage (XSI). MR had alway been around in Soft, even in the Soft3d days and while PRman was the main choice for film, many used Mental Ray for everything else. If you knew what you were doing, it was a great renderer. The MR integration in XSI was second to ...

Re: The return of Mudbox?

My point was though, that the likes of Zbrush and Mari may have kicked on, and Substance Painter has emerged but certainly no more than 5 years Mudbox was easily up there and could stand toe-to-toe. Mudbox's problem wasn't features, it was getting people to look at it and give it go. Mudbox was alwa...

Re: Fabric Engine EOL

When a company closes, there's usually alot more information and often some quotes from owners/directors. Only this last week Rushes VFX in London Soho is closing and there was a simple press release with some info. So personally I would wait to hear from Paul before jumping to any conclusions. If i...

Re: The return of Mudbox?

If this is true from Autodesk, then I have one thing to say - it's about time. And it's good to see Jill back as well, she did alot with training and transitional stuff when the Soft EoL stuff was going on. As for Mudbox itself, it's such a great software and honestly it's every but as good as zbrus...
