Re: What if Softimage died?
Sorry, the seats or the tires may be different? Is the manual vs automatic version of a car is a totally different car made separately by two teams who won't share the same base car? People also like different things with their software and that's why 3D software is highly customizable. Car analogi...

Re: What if Softimage died?
Interesting comparison there regarding car companies. The VW group actually contains the following brands - Audi, Bentley, Bugatti, Lamborghini, Porsche, SEAT, Skoda and Volkswagen, and even though these brands are different and have a different appeal, they actually share alot. In some cases over ...

Re: What if Softimage died?
Softimage like 3dsmax if they are killed by Autodesk will remain like Windows XP with a lot of users. They are good enough and in many cases better than what Autodesk saying is investing on. One of the things I like most about Softimage is really the community. And the software, of course. But I gu...

Re: What if Softimage died?
I like the idea of selling Soft as: 'casual, entry-level, general purpose 3D' (knowing of course this is an understatement). AD would have to show real dedication to continue Soft, though, because how inviting would it be to learn an application which is close to discontinuity. You said some good s...

Re: What if Softimage died?
I would vote for "Advertisement and Games". (just created a new field) But I guess all major freelancers use Softimage best for Advertisement and Games (huge market, next-gen, etc) that need good and advanced tools. I'm guessing that the "VFX and Film" will always be a Maya/Houdi...

Re: Little rumor
can anyone point me to the roadmap and plans for modo and houdini? Thanks. Point to roadmap nobody can I guess. But modo aside (because it's still growing to be a full application), if you like at the improvements with each version of Houdini, they are quite impressive. Anyway ... I'm enjoying Soft...

Re: Little rumor
Frankly I thought you were onto something here, and that the whole IBC discussion or the "missing tutorials" discussion are distractions. Except you do know what is to come, or while you can't tell what you're going to get in the next couple of years, you should be able to guess what the ...

Re: Little rumor
Obviously, Maya is an all-around app, even though some user interface bits are hilariously clunky compared to the equivalent feature in Softimage. It covers the same grounds. It has features the other doesn't like fluid, paintfx, xgen, various bits in modeling and animation. But it doesn't have a p...

Re: Little rumor
Hey Bellsey, thanks for this long explanation. I appreciate it. As for the last statement, I'm not accusing you guys of not doing a good job, God forbid. What I was saying (and you explained on your post) is that I would like to see more stuff from Softimage. To be honest, I prefer Softimage and May...

Re: Little rumor
Hi Bellsey, I just shared my impressions, not confirming nothing, just impressions. As you said, Softimage is being used more in commercials and tv promos, idents, etc. So for that I think it would be more suited to get the Maya stop at the presentation. Max is widely used in Europe for that and Sof...

Re: Little rumor
I don't know if the rumor has any truth to it. What I do know is that every person I talk to about in the industry tells me that I need to learn Maya or even Max if I ever want to work with VFX or Games. I think the only person who talked good about Softimage was Paul (VFX Supervisor from DNeg) and ...
