Compositing using EnvironmentSwitcher

Post by shushens » 01 Jul 2009, 20:30

Hey everyone!

I have been reading Master Zap's blog where this method has been outlined for compositing directly inside the 3D app to get one composited finished render out without minding passes or anything.

http://mentalraytips.blogspot.com/2007/ ... mples.html

A workflow has been mentioned where having a basic lightprobe (or just an 8bit spherical image) can solve things for you along with the background image that you have procured from wherever, by the use of environment/background switcher production shader. Jeff Patton has also used this shader in his vehicle rendering video.

Now, I am in a situation where I have this car I need to put on a background, but I do not have any HDRI or ordinary panoramic image that even remotely resembles the environment in the image. So, pretty much that simple JPEG is all I have, but the car needs HDRI along with other things.

So, in XSI, what should ideally be my workflow? How do I proceed? How do I create this spherical image to elude the viewer so that he thinks there was actually an HDRI used?

Please give me some tips. I really don't know much about this production shader.
