Colour Management not behaving

Post by theboykidney » 09 Sep 2013, 15:09

Hi,
I have a scene, colour management boxes ticked for regions/viewports and Renderpass/Preview.
so in the viewport and rendering it looks the way it should.
however when i take the image into FX tree or AE, the colours are off, even though it rendered on screen correctly. So its like its displaying the correct colour at render time, but when it writes the file, it writes it as if the colour management boxes were unticked.
seems like a bug?

Hi kidney, colour management is for visualization only, it does not mess with the actual files. This means you can store the linear data produced by the renderer, which would be advantageous if you use float or half-float formats (which are becoming a standard). That said with 8bit maps like you are trying to output this workflow is not optimal, since one would get color bending when trying to sRGB the colors in comp.

So for a 8 bit workflow there is a button in the Render Pass options called "Bake color correction" (or something of that sort). If this is standard to you it might be useful to tick this in your user preferences, under rendering, so every new pass will be set up in this way and you wont have to think about it again.

The pass option is: "Apply Display Gamma Correction" ;-)

If you would go to a float file format like exr it would be a great thing ! because AE recognize it and color manage it automaticaly
However, be carefull with mental ray in SI (normally your are ;-) he don't always 1:1 the render region in linear mode...

Cheers guys, that was it. Oddly enough no one in here had ever come across this before.
its a very old project that has come back for some changes, so not changing anything I dont have to, never know the trouble it might cause down the pipeline.
