Reflect only certain stuff

Post by Zafar Iqbal » 07 Jan 2014, 19:04

Is it possible to have certain materials only show other certain objects or refl maps in reflections using v-ray (preferably) or mental-ray, without having to rely on passes?

I have no idea with v-ray, in m-ray hmm, really depends on what you want. One option would be to use ray switch nodes to split out exactly what a material displays to other parts of the render engine, like reflection. Iv only ever used it as a way to speed up renders though, e.g. have materials show up as lambert to final gathering etc hehe, could be possible to use the same node to adjust how reflections work to your benefit ?, not really sure. V-ray, not a clue :)

I'm fairly sure there a way to do it in mray the way I think you are wanting, cant remember how though.. more info / pics etc would help :)

Edit: lol, just noticed ray switch is deprecated... ugh, what am I supposed to use now to speed up my renders ? :)

Humm no, i don't think it's possible out of the box with a simple RaySwitch as you can't make "groups" of reflections...
Although yes i think it's possible with a system like sj_radio from Stefano Jannuzzo http://sjannuz.com/Arnold/sj_shaders/doc/sj_radio.html

I don't remind if the shader exists for MentalRay before he goes for Arnold ... ?

hmm, if you search for stefano on rray.de you get http://sjannuz.com/sj_radio/doc/sj_radio.html , think you need to get the local backup from rray though... if it still actually works in 2014's version of mray tho... hmm :)

.. it might be so old that its a case of re-building the spdl / whatever libs and crossing fingers ?, might not be 100% functional
