not so obvious this one, in the end had to put the operation on the strand pointcloud and not the pointcloud I was wanting to set the color on!
there is an ICE compound attached below and a picture of the applied compound in the ice tree and a video demonstrating it working.
all you have to do is plug the name of the pointcloud whose color you want to set by strand color into the compound.
** caution *** this is very computationally expensive if you use lots of strands and lots of particles like eg pixel particles grid. strongly advise using 1 strand to setup then increase from there

I hate to say it, but it doesn't seem to want to work with Generate Strand Trails.
When I look in your compound, Get self.StrandColor remains red no matter what.
Are Strand Trails different than Strands?
