si-community nudity tags

Post by Hirazi Blue » 10 Jul 2011, 10:02

This is a follow-up to a remark made by McNistor in rray's WIPs thread.

The problem with nudity tags/nudity warnings on international forums always is that the people directly involved in the creation of imagery aka the artists have their own set of ideas about nudity as just another aspect of their creative endeavours. Everyone who has studied human anatomy as part of their artistic training, for instance, doesn’t necessarily shy away from a bare breast and often finds aforementioned nudity tags/nudity warnings a ridiculous waste of time, as they cannot see anything offensive in a few naked body-parts in a picture.
Most people, the sometimes hypothetical “boss” in any “when the boss walks by” however, are no “artists” and do not necessarily share the same set of beliefs artists do. (Sometimes even artists themselves don’t share them either, BTW.) As we all should know, there are parts of the world and parts in almost any society, where nudity is frowned upon and people have a hard time distinguishing between “artistic nudity” and “bad” nudity. This is something artists must learn to live with. As we as a si-community strive to be a worldwide community, i.e. a community that potentially is being watched all over the world, by people of very diverging views on this matter (and many others, one hastens to add), the nudity tags/nudity warnings are an easy attempt not to offend anyone, for whatever reasons they might be offended by it. We’re not here to change the world, that’s something others may gladly try. We’re only here to maintain a worldwide community for users of Autodesk Softimage without unnecessarily stepping on anyone’s toes (okay, maybe Maya users…).
