Characters for outdoor posters

Post by dagor » 11 Jun 2009, 07:44

Hi, i guess some of you saw this work on other xsi forums, but i`ll post it here to support the community :)
Feel free to discuss it or not.

I`m working in design studio as 3d artist. We have a client a coffe-houses brand "Kofemolka" wich means coffee-grinder in translate. We are working on outdoor posters with series of characters and the main slogan of advertising campaing "... know best cafe in the city". We replace dots ... with different charters in different series.

The work is kind of cartoon or toy style but not at all. The characters should be fun and charismatic.

For now we have finished 3 series Superwoman, Blondies, City guests. All series constist from 3 characters so 9 total. And i`m workin on other series so don`t know
how much series will be in total. Will post new with time.

I`m not a character artist so this work is hard for me. I have no detailed sketches and charisma is mostly my part of work.
I make model of base character for series and then 3 modification. Also emotions using shape manager, simple shading and rendering.
Actual rendersize is 3000*3500px. Then our designer make paintover and color correction for rendering and this is our piplene.

I render cup and hands separately from characters so designer have some freedome in postwork and composition.
Also i use diffuse, reflection and specular render chennels.

I`ll post here finished characters after designers postwork so if you have any questions about xsi, settings, wireframe just ask and i`ll answer with details.

Sorry for my bla-bla-bla, Ok, now the characers :)

I love characters! On the first images I registered reflections at the wrinkles of the mouth, but the last images don't show that anymore, good stuff! Looking forward to see more :-bd

After having seen more of your work in this series in other forums, I firstly want to say once more, that these character all look great.
Catwoman, however, is my personal favorite... :D
And as I read on the German xsiforum that this is an ongoing project (which is nice, obviously), aren't you and your colleagues afraid to run out of ideas and doesn't your client fear overkill, as even with a great idea you can stretch it too thin?

Qwesto, you are right about wrinkles and light there )) I rebuild light rig after first characters and changed shading after blondies. Rendertime for firts images was about 12hours, now rendertime is about 1-2 hours. I always try to improve my workflow and save some production time.

Hirazi Blue, thanks. Yes, it`s ongoing projects. I think we will made 10 series. Don`t know exactly how much clients need. The potential of our work is not only outdoor. Client can use character in menu and sell souvenirs. We just at very start of the long way ))) Now i`m workin on two more series, - newborn baby and old macho :) I`m a slave of this project )) they never stop it.

Nice! I like the third one (with the cap) best,
as any alien would obviously totally blend in wearing such a "disguise"... =))

Hirazi Blue :)

mtea, nice to see you here :)
this is cause of our designers. i rendered this characters with 2 type of speculars. one strong sharp specular and one soft skin-like specular was used for this character. all postworks done by designer and depend on his artistic vision. designer mixed speculars in photoshop and also changed skin colors for 2 characters :)

BTW this 3 colors are very popular for car in this summer so may be this is why aliens shader looks like carpaint :)

personaly i also don`t like to render all hands separately and compose it with cup later in photoshop cause there are no hands reflection on the cap :))

oh they really look like carpaints:) and these colors are always good for cars...you know: never change a running system:)

ahm the reflections on the cups, yes you are right..and overall i would say, that the blanks(i think these are the lights) are to sharp..maybe only use the lights for the diffuse and for specs or reflection make new blanks with small fall off(its big different than turning on glossyness at reflection)...but i think now its to late to change this right..maybe for new projects..
