as a 3d artist i also don`t like sharp lights reflection i did 3 cup renders with soft reflection but our ardirector did not liked it. finali he said to make cup like on attached photo
btw this man also knows best cafe in the city ))

i think your artdirector is more a photograph right..they always wand sharp reflections because it is more difficult for create them in real:)...

but i notice it much more time..never try to explain "no-3d-people" what is more nice and what not:)
