Over Riding an instance's color

Hello.. I posted this in Rendering but this might be a better place for it.

I have a bunch of instances (Not using ICE, actual instances of the mesh) and wanted to hand pick a few and assign them a new constant color using a render partition... But it wont let me.

I was going to use a color matte pass to add variation to the scene but the instances are not taking to the color change.

Is there a way to Over Ride the color some how?
