I used windows XP without any UAC and never had any pb ... you just need what to do if you remove UAC with windows 7 (at your own risk).

One day a week I test all computers with Spybot and Avast and no virus or Adware ou spy something detected ...
Avast 5 seems to be very powerfull it can block some web page when it detects some bad scripts see after ;)

Well... that's because XP doesn't have a UAC alike, and in XP every user is by default assigned administrator rights.
So -every- app/shader/plugin/driver/virus/trojan/rootkit etc. will work without any asking or problems ;)

That explains why it worked for you all that time. I would still contact the guy to see what's going on.
