Area Composite poll

Post by Hirazi Blue » 18 Jun 2011, 08:34

Over at the Area Mark Rasmussen (of the TOXIK/Composite BLOG) started a poll to "to give ADSK an idea of how many people are using Composite now and are interested in seeing composite developed more, than it currently is."

While I doubt this will actually convince Autodesk in any way, it doesn't hurt to go over there to cast a vote:
Area - Toxik/Composite poll

Meh....

Toxic is a dead product, the last two releases only showed some bugfixes that were to annoying to ignore.
I know it's free with Subscription, but I would advise to move on and look at something else for compositing.

Toxic is heavily bugged to me, it has some serious bug wich produces instant crashes, its not reliable for any serious work because the risk of losing data is way too high, just open it use Image Import -> create a new composition after that in the "image import" tab down the timeline click the button "reload". Istant crash.

Its full of those things that you discover only when you use it and it is time wasted totally, also the interface is convoluted, counter productive, not intuitive at all and with an annoying workflow of creating every composition for every thing you do, even if you want to quickly drag an image and do an easy edit on the fly (btw you cant even drag and drop an image).

FXTree is 100 times faster, more stable, more productive and less buggy.

Sure, but while Composite could still conceivably get updated (with some necessary bug fixes), I don't really see any further development of the FXTree (as much as I would want to). Letting Composite die "as is" seems a shame...

@jerry7,
There's already connections between the FXTree and Softimage, so depending on what you need some stuff is already possible. Especially on the clip in/out section.

@Hirazi,
Way back in 2007 I was looking at beta screens of Toxic, at that point in time still bothered with a cumbersome database setup and connection to Flame etc. Toxic was slow, buggy and expensive and didn't add much to the already existing pool of AD compositing/editing apps of AD besides the new and exciting 32bit compositing and editing.
And at that point in time Fusion and Shake were still king of the hill, so another expensive app wasn't really picked up with enthusiasm ;)
The peeps at AD never got Toxic to take off properly, so in the end it became the 'gift that comes out of your own pocket' as you're paying for Subscription anyway.
It's the same with Matchmover and ImageModeler, all three are dead products and haven't changed between the last three releases of Softimage/Max/Maya.
For your basic day to day compositing the FXTree works still wonderfully well, I use it a lot for jobs. For more extensive jobs, you can go for Fusion or Nuke, or, if you have a masochistic streak... After Effects :p

Being a mere hobbyist on a very tight budget my options are sadly limited to the FXTree and Composite. While I "like" the FXTree better (but that might have something to do with the fact that I've known/used it since I bought xsi 6 essentials), Composite has some nice features, like the plugin-free motion vector blur.
I can live with one "dead" compositor, but two "dead" compositors seems like a waste...
But as I can't afford any other, I will have to learn to live with that also, obviously...

There is also Blender compositor, wich is free and nodal :p
The best compositor i tried for me is still Fusion, it is fast and i love how it works, the interface and the tools are great, cant say the same about Nuke wich i never liked even if its powerfull.
I am sorry that Toxic isnt updated like it might deserve, it is a good piece of software but yeah..it feels abandoned overall..So i use it really few mostly for fun and tests and it always end up crashing :)) =))

@ Hirazi,
afaik both Fusion and Nuke have a PLE version that will work just fine, but are limited to PAL resolutions.
Or at least it was like that at some point in time.

So, as a hobbyist, if you're not cranking out HD movies, this could do as well. ;)

@Max: Just curious, are you a freelancer, or employed somewhere?

@Rork - Thanks, I didn't know that...
Are these PLE's "intrusively" watermarked?

Just googled for it................... ;)

Nuke seems to have randomly placed, colored pixels in each frame.
Fusion I can't tell atm, just give it a go I would say.
Maybe you like it.

I'm a freelancer and glad to be :(( , it is hard but i dont want compromises and uses softwares like 3ds Max or Maya, most studios if not all of them wants you to use those 2, and i litterally lose my mental sanity to use max or maya :)
