dissecting "painterly" effects?

Post by Hirazi Blue » 08 Oct 2015, 16:18

As I am trying to recreate some of the “painterly effects” Photoshop and XSI Illusion have on offer, I was wondering if someone could point me to some resource which dissects these effects, so I can - as an exercise in futility/learning experience - try to rebuild them in Fusion. I have already found some thorough documentation on convolution matrices for the more basic/fundamental stuff like edge detection, but would be interested in recreating more of the apparently more elaborate processes (like a "smudge" filter for instance).
