Mailing List Issues (A fix?)

Post by EricTRocks » 24 May 2012, 15:20

Sorry for the cross posting but this seems to be a widely affecting issue!

For those on the Autodesk Softimage Mailing list:

I just realized I hadn't been getting messages since around the 22nd... just thought people were busy working on cool stuff.

Went onto the google group page and clicked the "My Membership" button at the top. It was set to "No Email". Just switched it to "Email" so hopefully it works and will help others... fingers crossed!

This is probably some Google issue changing many people's settings that has their gmail address subscribed.

To keep on reading while the List acts strangely:
It seems the alternative archive
http://www.mail-archive.com/softimage@l ... odesk.com/
"gets" more mail than the Google Groups ATM (but even it drops posts occasionally)...

why do you use google groups to receive mails from the mailing list? it's meant to be an archive of the real mailing list

So now even I have gotten the infamous mail
Your membership in the mailing list Softimage has been disabled due to
excessive bounces The last bounce received from you was dated
28-May-2012. You will not get any more messages from this list until
you re-enable your membership. You will receive 3 more reminders like
this before your membership in the list is deleted.
although I seem to have been getting almost all mails ever since I subscribed.
I sort of checked this (but obviously not 100% thoroughly) using multiple random comparisons
with the alternative mailing list archive.
And all the while the webadress at "http://listproc.autodesk.com" mentioned
in all "official" listproc communication still isn't available.
And if this really for instance is a gmail problem, like some people suspect
wouldn't it a be a good idea to confirm this officially instead of letting everybody guess about it?

The Mailing List is finally dead (or at least dying a horribly unpleasant slow death)?
:(

PS I fixed my membership again, but this will only help if someone fixes the mailing list itself soon...

Stephen Blair was contacted apparently. He's not back until Tuesday and hopefully will take a look at what is going on. I haven't gotten that mail yet but I see a bunch of messages started coming in yesterday and still today.

I think the listproc autodesk site is just a default link they have it set to while the mail server may be somewhere else or not actually a functioning part of the list setup. I think we'll be fine.

I receilved that bounce email message as well. maybe gmail was down for a bit?

I have admin access to the list and have re-enabled the google group subscription to the mailing list

p.s.: you wouldn't have received it if you're subscribed to the google group and not actually subscribed to the mailing list

That's always a possibility, but that's why I added that I still had a steady flow of posts that came from the mailing list, I checked it and I do not seem to have missed many, comparing it to the alternative mailing list archive, not warranting the qualification "excessive bounces" IMHO. And a quick, not very thorough search concerning any higher amount of gmail accounts bouncing mail doesn't turn up many reports recently either...
But the troubles with the mailing list seem to be "older" than this recent wave of "disable" mails, it seems. For more than a week there has been a "crazy" amount of "ping" mails going through the mail server, indicating some deeper problem, I guess. As I only subscribed to lurk, not to post, I haven't tried if my own posts would get through, though...

And @EricTRocks - You're probably right concerning the "listproc.autodesk.com" site, but then they could just change that info in their standard mails or better yet change the address to one that actually works...

there are 370 members of the list that are subscribed with gmail accounts, so that's going to generate a lot of 'ping?' mails when the list goes down on gmail because of excessive bounces. It looks like 5 consecutive days of bounces would cause the server to suspend an account.

That was not why I mentioned the "ping" mails, even I understand that much. I mentioned them because following the "ping" trail would get you nearer to the start date of the problem...

By this do you mean 5 days with at least one bounce per day or 5 days of constant bounces?

I think if the system receives 10 bounces over a 5 or 7 days period you get suspended. I've tweaked those parameters a bit to avoid that. People can email me if they've been suspended and need to get back on. I've re-enabled a few people who posted recently with a gmail account.

I just took a minute to unsubscribe from the Mailing List
and as I never intended to post on the list anyway
I will revert to reading the mail-archive archive again.
All problems solved, as far as I'm concerned...

Hi,

I was having the same issues as everyone else and just wanted to post and say I was able to unsubscribe and resubscribe to the list today. Everything seems to be working like it used to. I was originally subscribed with a non-gmail email address and was able to resubscribe using that same address. Maybe give it another go today? Good luck.
