If you are a render-guy, please. Do not do this.

erm, are you sure what Ambient Occusion is? It's not just about soft shadows.

Ambient occlusion is a method to compute lighting on a surface of an object that takes into account light brightness due to occlusion of the surface in relation to light source.

Yes, i know what AO is. And i'm pretty sure you know what i mean in this thread saying "AO or soft GI shadows from the sky". Probably thats not AO on that screenshot, but it still looks like dirt from AO pass.

ok, maybe i wasn't very informative with the statement, so i'll try to elaborate. What i see on that picture is: too soft sun-shadow (comparing to footage hard shadows) + AO pass OR most likely just lack of GI contribution in the ground contact area under the turtles.

You're right. The shadows are too soft compared to the environment around them.
Also, it doesn't look like they're making contact with the ground. But to make a better judgement on that, one would have to examine it frame by frame.

I didn't emphasize on the shadows being to soft or bad contact because its obvious and happens very rare. But what is more subtle and happens more often is this:

And if its not the problem with combining GI (or AO) pass with direct light pass, give it a name you like. Yes, i'm talking about that dark stain under the sphere, and yes, that's what i see on that turtles screenshot.
