Ultra dense Cloth simulation? With some of stretch and sheer stiffness.

Indeed, but it wouldn't need to be very dense, you can let the actual pushing model seep through, and shade both the cloth and the pushing model with a round corners shader ('blending' them together) for the pushed details.

(with arnold or redshift round corners)

Or also with the roundorner details from the pushing model seeping through, instead of a tight cloth sim, an ICE push op modulated by constrained nulls (like one fror each hand and face, with an exponential curve of influence) at the contacting extremities might also do the trick for the deforming grid. (faster and more 'live' without any simulation to run through)

good old shrinkwrap could be worth a try too (stack would look like: syflex ICE cloth sim, increase subdivision, some shrinkwrap, some smooth for roundness) .. but probabyl syflex is fast enough for ultra highres sim

yes indeed :) perhaps also with oo_shrikwrap from the res section for extra control!
