xsibase "may harm your computer" [???]
At the moment Google flags the xsibase as being harmful ("This site may harm your computer"). I've sent one of their moderators a PM about it earlier today. This no doubt will be repaired soon, but it's something you don't see if you bookmark into the page and it seems information some might find helpful...

Re: xsibase "may harm your computer" [solved?]
mattmos, XSIBase moderator, just posted this on the xsibase:
So it would seem the problem has been solved, although it may take a while before Google acknowledges this...
;)
(Quoted from here)There was a malware attack on xsibase, i think we've managed to resolve the problem with the site, but google still has us indexed as having malware. So we have to resubmit the site to google. Will take some time i guess to get us off the naughty list...

How does this blocking even work? Does Firefox ask Google about every site I visit?

probably more like Google put xsibase on a blacklist and shows you the warning page instead.

So that blacklist is local on my computer and refreshed regularly by Firefox?
The alternative would be Firefox sending all my urls to google, which I don't like so much.

No, not locally, just simple DNS stuff I guess.

Re: xsibase "may harm your computer" [solved?]
Quickly "Googled" this - from a Firefox FAQ:
;)
(Quoted from here)There are two times when Firefox will communicate with Mozilla’s partners while using Phishing and Malware Protection. The first is during the regular updates to the lists of reporting phishing and malware sites. No information about you or the sites you visit is communicated during list updates. The second is in the event that you encounter a reported phishing or malware site. Before blocking the site, Firefox will request a double-check to ensure that the reported site has not been removed from the list since your last update. In both cases, existing cookies you have from google.com, our list provider, may also be sent.

Google apparently deems the xsibase 100% safe again,
so all problems should be over now...
If you still experience problems, you should probably clear your browser cache for the xsibase pages...

Re: xsibase "may harm your computer" [???]
yet another blow to out tiny community. is it actually infected and trying to get our details or is it a error reporting bug?
Gossip is what no one claims to like, but everybody enjoys.
Re: xsibase "may harm your computer" [???]
Unfortunately it is a malware infection, and one which keeps coming back, as it seems to have found some vulnerability due to old forum software or old php.
Will keep you posted.

Hmmm, is this getting quite serious now?
I thought xsibase would be down for a couple of days. Is there a weakness in the very architecture of the forum?
It is an enormous repository of information about Softimage. I feel slightly lost and a bit sad without it.
Good luck to all involved behind the scenes in it's rescue.

The software it is run on is old YaBB. XSI Base was super customized off of that thus upgrading it to the newer incarnation of that Software is pretty much impossible at this point. :\

That's not good, not good at all.EricTRocks wrote:The software it is run on is old YaBB. XSI Base was super customized off of that thus upgrading it to the newer incarnation of that Software is pretty much impossible at this point. :\
F*cking hackers (sorry for swearing).
So is there a Plan B? Or do we face the genuine prospect of losing XSIBase? That would be catastrophic.

Re: xsibase "may harm your computer" [???]
Last I heard they are trying to clean out the virus which probably means rolling back to a back up of the files on the system. Hopefully leaving the backend database in place to keep all the messages.
I've said it elsewhere, if the system can't handle the forum updates to secure it from hacks, viruses, and possible user info loss, it should be locked as an archive and put somewhere like archive.xsibase.com. Install a bleeding edge CMS / forum that can be updated and upgraded readily. Also don't customize it to a point where the upgrades are painful.

Re: xsibase "may harm your computer" [???]
If Raff can't get rid of the malware permanently (I think its clean right now, but have to resubmit to google again grr) , Plan B is:
Upgrade YaBB 1.5.1 to YaBB 2.2 and see how much we can break, then upgrade again from YaBB 2.2 to SMF latest version using their converter and see how much more we can break in the process. Hoping it will be possible to salvage the bulk of the forum data, but front page functionality is another matter

Sounds like a solid plan! Here is a suggestion, just give the upgrade instructions to some animators. They know how to really break things.
Good luck on implementing the plan!
