Ha!! Please make that video go away.
I had no idea my work was so bad back then.

Yes, I look very different now.

That video is great stuff. It was a joy to watch. Things have come a long way since back then, no? Lol

Btw, you could have easily been a double for Joe Pantoliano.

When owei came up with the idea for the 3dwillneverbethesame website I was very enthusiastic, as I truly believed the community would be able to step up and help create a fitting tribute to our once proud software Softimage. While we are very grateful to those who did already contribute, the overall lack of response is rather disappointing. Apart from the contributions of stories and statements, hardly anyone has even bothered to write comments to the existing contributions. Before we write 3dwillneverbethesame off as a failed attempt, I would really like you all to reconsider your position and think of contributing something after all.

I think for me, this site came a bit too soon, when I was still trying to digest everything else going on. I subsequently forgot about it.
So there's that, but also, for me, 3D will be the same for quite a while as I evolve equivalents of my tools to other platforms.
It irritates me that so soon, many are so eager to talk about Softimage in the past tense and jump straight on to Maya, as if AD had just pulled a switch to make Softimage not work anymore.
So, yes, I do believe that 3D wont be the same, but not because of Softimage 'dying'.. I believe that in 5 years, 3D wont be the same because Maya will start to be superceded by more flexible platforms. Not by a sudden change, but by tools like Houdini Engine and Fabric Splice, slowly eating Maya away from the inside and the balance shifting in their favour as a platform in itself.

So whilst I think the site is a worthwhile endeavour, it just doesn't align with my current defiant attitude.

Two things:
* IMHO a good tribute should be started while the wounds are still fresh, before everyone has moved on.

* The name of the website 3dwillneverbethesame is a cynical nod to a webpage by the same name used by Softimage Inc. back in the day when they started to promote XSI 1.0.

Thanks Hirazi for brining this up again.
The site is NOT meant as a memorial or something like that, so the name might be misleading. If you have any suggestion to name it better, please let me know!
The name is not the min thing about that website. It´s about you and Softimage and it is not meant as a grave stone, by far not! So, again, please consider contributing with stories, making ofs, statements, pictures, videos what ever...

cheers,
oli

being one of those that wanted to contribute - and still intending to its just have not got round to it yet and did not realise there was a cut off point! and in my defense, there is a lot of years to cover for my story... :D

also, in a similar vein, who else was disapointed with only 5k votes to save Softimage? seems like nobody cares unless its a 100k voter issue these days. it is shocking how few of us there are who use Softimage AND care enough about it to get people to vote. but, lets say for example you tried, you talk about this to friends outside the industry and they stare middle distance and like 'who gives a ...' so this new site is not going to ever get a lot of traffic regardless. so what :)

A pointless exercise much? it did unfortunately (although not intentionally) come across like an epitaph for the living dead and am glad its not intended to be that way and hope it will not become one, even though many of us are still working on various long term exit strategies... b-(

AFAIK there isn't. The somewhat underwhelming amount of response has been a bit demotivating though.

I think I could get you a couple more if you take spanish submissions? Have you gone to the Spanish and Russian forums?

I'll post something shortly.

Yes Spanish and of course Japanese users..

Funny though how userbase has been inversely proportional to "quality"... 3DS, Maya, SI.

If you look at various productions end result (both look & scope)
in proportion to the size of productions (in team or budget size)
is when you can clearly see the disparity.

You can even recognize stuff that could almost only have been made in SI.
(without armies of scripting TD's)
