collaborative software solution?

Post by redmotion » 25 May 2010, 14:48

We could use a central file system remotely accessible, like webspace with SVN (subversion) folders http://subversion.tigris.org/. Otherwise it will be really difficult to keep track of everything.

http://tortoisesvn.net/about
Using TortoiseSVN would mean everyone would be working on the same XSI project folder/workgroup directory, everything could be neatly organised, backed up/versioned and everyone could remain current with a couple of mouse clicks in Windows Explorer. (It's possible there is a Linux equivalent that might work with this but I'm not sure. Is anyone going to be using Linux for this?)

Video about how it works: http://www.vimeo.com/8370887 (Not watched it all but it looks like it shows how it works at about 1m20s).

And we could also use a bug tracker to create a list of tasks, assign people these tasks and keep an eye on what everyone is doing (or not doing :) ), also put on the same web server or even on the si-community server?

It works pretty well for the Black Mesa HL2 Mod. But it will probably cost money (renting server space) to do it this way.

we use a heavily modified version of svn in work (its built right into our 3ds max interface...ye i know max...but its the package most of the guys work in here) and it works really well so i think that it would be a good way to go. as for the mantis yoke, i have no idea how it works. most of the time when working over the net we use a simple google calender system to dish out and track work its very simple but perhaps not quite so powerful as what you suggest in mantis?

as for how to move forward? how about gathering together mood boards and inspirational images as animate suggested and building up a library to inspire our concept artists when we get them onboard?

Are you sure a versioning system like subversion is up to the task at hand?
Wouldn't it be prudent to look into some kind of open source Digital Asset Management system?

edit: a quick web search turned up three potential candidates:
EnterMedia
Razuna
ResourceSpace

Managing such a beast would be a hassle, but getting the most out of subversion is no picnic either AFAIK... ;)

Razuna looks easy to use and it would take care of the project necessities?
