Community ICE Project - Modeling Tools

Post by Inisheer » 23 Jan 2012, 20:42

I've decided to branch the Community ICE Project modeling information out of the general project thread and into a more specific thread for those that wish to contribute. Below is the short list of suggestions provided by the community in that thread. As more ideas surface, we can update this post.

Easy (from highly to less relevant)
- Extrusion along curve (fast and simple) Jump to thread
- Symmetry Jump to latest update
- Merge vertices (based on threshold)
- Revolution
- Loft
- Shell (ICE version already exists in SAP so is less relevant)

Intermediate (from highly to less relevant)
- Extended primitives
- Clone island (clones one or more islands of an input mesh, with option to delete the originals)
- Extrusion along curve (complex)
- Relax/smooth tool (with shape preservation?)
- Cap Holes (ICE version already exists in SAP so is less relevant)

Advanced (from highly to less relevant)
- Better boolean tools (with actually good results
- De-intersect (should fix intersecting groups of polygons: think of fixing the result of a cloth simulation ran without self-collisions. this looks more like a deformer for me, but is great!)
- Retopology (based on curves?)
- Bridge Tool (Modo alike, able to twist and find nice solutions to bridge different number of edges)

I recommend if you decide to work on one of these tools, you post it here and make routine announcements on your progress (or lack thereof). That way others can "jump in" as the opportunities arise.

Hi Inisheer,

Extended primitives:

As part of the ICE Topology tutorial that I am currently working on, I have already made various primitives, so count me in on this one.
$ifndef "Softimage"
set "Softimage" "true"
$endif

Great, thanks for the input. I am currently working on Symmetry. I have run in to a few problems and will update this post with details once I return home.

I have created a proof of concept of sorts for a quick symmetry compound. There are still quite a few things to work out as it is simple at this point. However, I think it's a good start.

If there is a better performance / logical way of doing this, please post your thoughts and I (or others) can edit the compound.

Don't forget about the transformation matrix of the object ;)

I would like to have a Symmetry deformer tool such as a Smart ReSym in ZBrush. Tool must analyze the topology, not thresholds

well, i added option to keep original mesh and weld points - (weld points compound made by Christian Gotzinger see here: http://vimeo.com/31921308) :)

Slightly updated the compound with a few comments and version number (1.1). I believe the next step should be to create a custom PPG for the symmetry axis. Any thoughts?

I just want to say that the (idea of) an ICE symmetry compound is BRILLIANT!

Suggestion/idea: make it not only mirror on 1 axis but add option for radial multiply? Useful for modeling wheelhubs, cogs, gears, clocks, octopuses (octopi?) or any other lifeform with a radial baseplan.

great idea... looks very usefull in zbrush where such a feature is available and you can see people creating complex models in no time with that...

Hmm. That's pretty interesting. I don't have any experience with the tool, but I'll see if I can work something out.

Been a bit busy lately with my 10 mo old son and graduate school (and work). Hopefully I will be able to work on it this weekend.
