Unreal Engine 4.1 is out!

Too many updates to list.... I think there's more updates in 1 month than Softimage received in 2 years...

Can't wait to tryout the vehicles template!

Forgot to say thanks! Looks really easy. I'm almost ready to import characters; still working on static meshes... Figured out how to render alphas on objects and how to model\import collision objects. Hopefully characters will follow soon!

Thanks :)

I'm testing my workflow using Softimage and some features I'm developing.

Facerobot Rig + Dynamic normal maps to enhance facial expressions...this is just a proof of concept, soon I'll make a Tech Demo to show some other stuff as well...
Anyway UE4 is pretty damn cool and having a bit of experience in ICE helped me quite a lot using Blueprints in order to achieve the desired result!

PS. "The FBX importer as now been upgraded to the 2014 version from Autodesk."

PPS. The Stylized Rendering showcase was already released, but I thought it looked quite nice, so I included pic here.

Is it me or they were inspired by ICE for the visual scripting?
Now there is even the possibility to access geometry at vertex level and procedural geometry creation...this is pretty damn good!!!!

That's generous:

Fun fact: FBX is closed source format. Fuck you Autodesk, once again.

This is amazing, really am wondering if I should get more into game engine type work instead of just 3D authoring, since SI is dying/dead. Lovely software, looks great!

What would be the ideal alternative? Alembic? Curious as why software need to invest in this closed format. Would be nice to use something Open Source.

I don't think you can really compare FBX and Alembic,
neither in what they want to achieve, nor the way they go about achieving it.

Improving FBX interoperabilility seems like a good idea for Blender.
It might be a product of the dreaded Autodesk, but it's widely adopted
and as such something you'd probably really want.

Personally I just sometimes wonder how big a donation one would have to give to the Blender Institute/Foundation
to get mister Roosendaal to finally and definitively retire... (newsflash: not a big fan).

Whenever I read about the retirement thing from people working in 3D industry, I'm questioning their motives which led them to this industry in the first place. Are you projecting someone's goals onto this person? Is this a goal you set for yourself? You're in computer graphics to make money and go to retirement?

Personally I can't really retire and I don't make any money from this: I am a "mere" hobbyist. I just don't like mister Roosendaal.

I actually don't know much about him, but I've signed up to CG Cookie to learn more of 3ds Max and today I decided to try some Blender tutorial. Must say I'm liking Blender more now. Hope it'll be a side add-on to 3ds Max. :)

Probably because despite some peoples views an opinions, FBX has remained a constant and known entity to many people, and it continues to be used extensively because it does what people need it to.
Alembic, despite its fine qualities, isn't perhaps suitable for games yet and aside from that no ones really stepped up and proposed a viable standard and format for the games industry to consider adopting. Some have tried, but nothing has ever seemed to get anywhere. Collada maybe?

Well I think it's not secret, Alembic is point-cache thing, "Alembic is very specifically NOT concerned with storing the complex dependency graph of procedural tools but instead stores the "baked" results". This is from wikipedia article. So no way to efficiently store the animated rig, if I'm correct. This is no go in games, simply as that.
From what I've heard, Collada seems to be "too much open", somehow hard to get the same pattern between 3d apps, exactly Softimage implementation of Collada refuses to work in Blender - there are discussions about this issue.
But, just for exact example, Blender seems to be happy with Colladas, coming from Autodesk FBX converter.
I'd say, somehow it is expected from that gracious and intelligent giant :), Autodesk, to release some gift to entire 3d world - like that FBX converter thing. I'm speaking seriously, only few adjectives are emotional :), just a little bit.
