Hey Letterbox, thanks for the PM.

I agree that Autodesk should give more spotlight to the work of developers as Eric and others who are creating great tools for a great software. I've seen people stop using Softimage because only Maya is getting pushed these days. I was going to take a post-grad course here in São Paulo of CG, but decided to decline because they changed the training from Softimage to Maya. Now, I have nothing against Maya and I know that somewhere in time I'll probably learn it deeply, but I also enjoy learning Softimage and the options of courses are now practically non-existent (I was going to take this course because it was a Softimage course).

Lately I've seen so many great work from Softimage houses (RodeoFX, Whiskytree), that are in level with the major VFX companies, and that's is so cool. They should market that more.

As for Eric tools, as soon as I have the money, I'll buy it. They look amazing and Eric should have more support to continue developing it.

As for marketing ... I've just received an e-mail from The Foundry where they are selling Modo 701 with 40% discount!
http://community.thefoundry.co.uk/store ... rce=Eloqua

Now ... why would they do that? Because they want to attract more users to it. So why Autodesk can't do something similar? Even Maxon were selling Cinema 4D R15 Studio with an $ 1000 bucks discount! And we know that the userbase of Cinema 4D is quite large these days. So I'm left with the feeling that Autodesk simply don't care. And when something like the interview with Eric pops up, I get happy. I'm getting happy with very little these days. :-t

When Eric Mootz releases his plugins for Softimage he didn't had any support from Autodesk Area. There were no news there. With Maya there is.

I think you paint too bleak a picture (but I am not saying you're wrong in general, BTW): if you search "Eric Mootz" at the Area you'll get several hits and most of them from further in the past (by that I mean the oldest entry dates from 2009). Especially Bellsey mentioned Eric's tools several times in his "Suite Spot" blog.

Come on guys. The main point is that he is getting the attention he deserves right now. We all want good plug-in developers to have a nice income and a good life.

And Eric deserves that too. Congrats Eric.

Yes, the biggest part is supporting the 3rd party dev so they can make a living and continue to work on tools no matter what platform they are building for. There are benefits from the multi-platofrm dev such as having them have enough income to take the time to continue to develop new features for the same plug-in on all platforms.

I want to see emRPC, emFluid, emPolygonizer, etc. in Softimage, Maya, and Fabric Engine. Will allow him to make some money and get more recognition for his hard work while giving me tools to use in whatever application I need to.

You can't live in a black and white world where only Softimage exists in these current times and worry about who got recognition for a plug-in dev'd in Maya or Softimage and not the other.

Great job Eric! Hurry up with those Fabric ports! :D

Would just like to add my voice. Eric was invaluable to our students last year. They made use of his plugins for their end of year short. He was incredibly helpful and the end result is it has been selected for the ITFS in Stuttgart. Our first one since our animation program began. Considering how time insane our course is his plugins worked amazingly well in students hands.

(we will release the short when we are able to. It currently has to screen public first at one of the competitions before it can be put up on the web)

So good to see him getting the exposure he deserves.

Kind regards

Angus

Just to set the record straight - it is not that we purposefully feature plugins for Maya and ignore Softimage ones. The reason why Eric’s emPolygonizer4 release for Maya was featured on AREA, is plainly that since his Behind the ScreenZ interview, we have direct communication and during the course of his interview, he had mentioned that this was coming down the pipes…so there was no question that this release wasn’t going to be highlighted on AREA.

If you go to AREA now, you will find a beautifully produced animated short by Czech studio R.U.R., which was created using Softimage and motionbuilder — and that is prominently featured on the AREA homepage.

I guess the grunge here is more related to how Autodesk has promoted (or not) Softimage as a competing and powerful package. But the main point of my post was to congratulate Eric, because he seems like a great guy who works really hard and it's nice to see people like that getting the attention they deserve. :D

On a related subject ... Eric tools will make a nice impact in Maya, but I imagine if they were available to Cinema 4D (don't know nothing about C4D SDK, etc). Just saying as the C4D community is really strong and supportive.
