Syflex announces Sylyn

Syflex has announced Sylyn, a “brand-new, fully node-based 3D animation” system. The new product, which is still in alpha, will include a full copy of Syflex’s eponymous cloth-simulation software.

A work-in-progress procedural animation system
There’s very little info about Sylyn on Syflex’s site, but it seems to be a completely procedural animation system.

Every part of its functionality can be represented as a node, while “new nodes can be created by combining and connecting nodes. These … can then be added to the menu, and become part of the software.”

Since any input to a node can be animated via a graph animation node, that opens up the possibility of creating a wide range of types of animation.

The montage of screenshots on Syflex’s website show both technical animation – for which this type of system would seem a more natural fit – and character work. There’s even what looks to be a Boolean operation.

The animation graph itself looks fairly simple, but the software is still early in development, and Syflex has a record of developing production tools, with Syflex itself having been used on a range of movies and cinematics.

Pricing and availability
Syflex is currently inviviting artists to alpha test Sylyn. There’s no information on pricing or a release date yet.

Exciting times... :-?

Interesting. Now compatibility is what matters.

Like I already commented on the CGChannel: let us hope they invite enough Softimage users to the alpha... ;)

Was about time that they bring out something new. Since ncloth I would say they lost a lot of ground on the cloth front.
And the EOL of Softimage wasn't pleasant for them neither I guess.

It's great that ICE like systems seem to be popping up left right and centre.
Let's hope they as intuitive to use. I'm looking forward to testing this one out.

Indeed! If you click on the first link, it brings-up posts related to Syflex, and this is what it shows :)

So who knows, maybe will Sylyn eventually become a good (or the next) "XSI replacement" in it's core desing phylosophy! (hopefully as advanced as approachable)

Everything prodecural in the market diverges so much, honestly I would've liked an announcement "syflex goes fabric" better :-s

Don't you think this applies to all software (not just the proceduralistic approach)?
To sell, you must stand out... (edit: and what constitutes "standing out" is anyone's guess).
(not saying this is a good thing BTW)

When a new industry starts shots in several directions. Everyone tries their one ideas, later , then the supposed good practices remain and there is consolidation. In this case the new industry is the "5D" nodal language.

Btw concerning the interface , i like the clean, stylish even not aggressive style of this Syflex one.

Would like to see more...

Not having heard anything about this since the original announcement,
I was wondering if this still is something we can still expect to materialize in the near future,
or if it died prematurely...
