Maya 2017 with Arnold

Post by Mathaeus » 25 Jul 2016, 23:27

As topic says, together with 'transition guide' from Mental Ray to Arnold. Other than that, noticed Time Editor, available in my 'little' Maya LT too, as replacement of Trax (Closest thing in SI to Trax in Maya is Animation Mixer).
P.S. According to Maya LT 2017 I've just launched, the rest (interaction, attribute editor, channel box, node jumbles, so on) remains the same, small changes here and there, that's it.

Well "Arnold" not Arnold, or lets say Arnold in Autodesk way:
Maya customers will be able to use Arnold out-of-the-box. However, it can only be used for foreground processing on your workstation. You will need to purchase additional Arnold licenses if you wish to scale your rendering capability using either a render farm or the cloud. This helps put Arnold on an equal footing with other third party renderers and allows customers to freely choose which renderer they wish to license when planning their workflows.
You have to pay more.

Ridiculous...if they don't slash the price of Maya.

So, if you have a network license with extra nodes of MR, that just disappeared, right? Every time I look forward to a release from Autodesk, I always get disappointed somehow. They should have left an overlap with Mental Ray for at least a year...

'Reason' is beautiful :D , nevertheless.

Well...

Maybe it is time for a Redshift license. Maybe inquire if they transfer license if you change main application.

Everything I have setup in Softimage and in Maya is Mental Ray based. I assume Softimage will remain unchanged because it is EOL, and Mental Ray was with that. Moving forward with Maya though, very disappointing with the Mental Ray issue and a network license. This should have been a 2018 move, not now. Way too soon and with zero notice.

So if you want Maya 2017, you lose Mental Ray, and if you want Mental Ray, then you cannot upgrade to Maya 2017, which I am entitled to via Maintenance for a massive amount of years.

I hope NVidia feels for their users and releases 3.14 at no charge for Maya 2017...very doubtful though.

What about thinking of moving on from Mentalray? Have you seen any improvements on it recently?

Another brilliant move by our "good friends" at Autodesk...
I am starting to feel rather glad I got out when I did.

Why oh why would you still use MR instead of vray, redshift or arnold.
There is just no way that MR still makes sense.

People love to complain instead of appreciating that they get a free Arnold license now.
And to mention. By no fucking word this announcement says that you cant install Mantal Ray (it even says, just download and install it).

Im done with this forum. Thought this will be a nice place to discuss about Maya, Houdini or other Software but it just became an inactive place for whining about Autodesk.

Is that true that there is no transition; if you're on maintenance - that's the only way to get maya 2017 - you can continue to run 2016 for two more years alongside 2017, so isn't that the transition period. You could move a scene from 2017 back to 2016 for shading and render (because older Maya can load scenes of future versions). Anyway there is a FAQ here Changes to rendering in Autodesk Maya 2017

@Helli...

Guess I rubbed you the wrong way, and its nice to see that others cannot have a different opinion than yours. I never once said that I didn't like the new Maya 2017. In fact the addition of Arnold is great, no complaints here. What I didn't care for was the abrupt change of no Mental Ray, without notice. All I mentioned is that there should have been some kind of overlap so people could setup for it. When Arnold was purchased, everywhere I read stated that there was going to have to be a breakout period with Mental Ray. Ultimately, Autodesk decided not to do that. Also, its not whining when you have a network license with extra render nodes, and that disappears overnight.

Mental Ray is a good render, if you had issues using it, I guess that is up to you. Unless I missed what you are talking about in regards to just downloading and installing Mental Ray for Maya 2017, please share the link. All I saw, was to get what I already had, is to repurchase it all over again.

@Luceric,

Thanks for the suggestion. That may be an option until I figure out what direction to go.

Imho one small advantage of huge user communities of Max, Maya, it is sort of freedom of speech, really no need to defend the product or developers. Because our small opinions are even smaller, while developer is already a beast. To bad that there is no 'physical' copy of software anymore, to throw it into wall, utilize as toilet for cats and so on :) .
Anyway back to topic, anyone knows what does it mean message about 'openCL not supported by nVidia drivers newer than 361, set appropriate env variable'. Got OpenCL to work by setting the env variable MAYA_OPENCL_IGNORE_DRIVER_VERSION=1, but is it better to rollback to older driver, or to live with this env variable.

To that whinny girl who left. Everybody knows Autodesk sucks. Buh bye. Anyways here is some good news for those who have to suffer with Maya

NVIDIA is supplying mental ray directly to Maya 2017 users starting today as a free-to-use beta.
