It means that the subscription model is growing slowly but not has fast as the investors would have liked it as client with permanent licences are slower to adopt the subscription model. The reaction of the investors was a massive sell-off which sent the shares down by 20% but, for those with foresight, it may be an opportunity to buy shares at a lower price as ADSK shares are still a "Gold Standard" and will certainly rises to the previous level as the restructuration get ongoing.

As Luceric said and the article pointed out, the rental model has moved from 23% from Q3 2016 to 43% in Q3 2017 total revenues and still climbing.

That's in a nutshell.

thanks for the summary :).

Why should it be a surprise that no one with a permanent license will want to waste money ona rental?

Forcing people to go to rental I HOPE will backfire immensely.

The Autodesk stock was 76$ a year ago. Now it's a 106$. That's up 40% in twelve month. At 130$, it probably had gone too high too fast.

I know we are the minority (we and a few other companies that still use Softimage to some degree) but the fact that you can’t use Softimage once you change to subscription forces us to stay in maintenance and eventually stop renewing it.

And yes it is a monopoly because the alternatives aren’t really alternatives for most cases. Everybody is pissed off by the subscription move but are almost forced to switch to it.

I thought the Softimage was permanent no matter what you do, I thought that was established a long time ago, no?

there's a (time limited) discount on subscription if you give up your permanent license

Haha.... True.

But only an handful of people would do so I guess. Just keep the licence(s) if you want to open up projects from earlier days ;)

I honestly never understood why AD was trying to start up in the game engine business with Stingray.

So many (free) excellent options to choose from, with already deep integration with all 3D applications. And free.... Oh.. I already said that.. ;)

Well if it was something that could be authored inside Max/Maya it would make sense.

There's some really nice scripts for Max that will export/import a whole scene setup into Unreal, including clones etc.
No need for Stingray imho..

I've always been baffled as well as to why both softimage and Autodesk M&E wanted to get into the game engine business. But, in Autodesk's defense, they do use stingray inside their own products now for realtime visualization. One of the products is called 3DS Max Interactive.
