No, Stingray was a 2014 acquisition, an already existing game engine called Bitsquid, and developed in Sweden.
The middleware that softimage people were moved to work on was called Project Skyline.

Apart all the more well known acquirement, there were a number small companies that were purchased that passed under the radar (which you won't find in wikipedia)
and consequently dissapeared or got dissolved in the AD mass.

Grip Entertainment was an other one
GRIP is a Montreal-based AAA game AI technology and consulting company. Its customers include Autodesk, BioWare, Disney, EA Montreal, Eidos Montreal and Intel. Its recent credits include Army of TWO: the 40th day, Deus Ex 3 and Tron:evolution. Its products are: • Digital Extra System: for crowd and ambient AI (full integration into UE3) • Character Control System: for NPC AI behaviour authoring and debugging (full integration into UE3 and other engines)

Indeed, Softimage people which were moved on-arrival (2008)

Now that was worth it! And how could that not be be fatal.

Even if it happend to be modeately fruitful (actually lasting barely a year or 2?),
sacrificing a very well establised and very long standing platform for the sake of whatever that was ? ..

Sounds alot like project skyline was more or less directly like "Project XSI purge"
