Maya 2019 released...

Post by owei » 16 Jan 2019, 10:14

..and it´s pretty underwhelming.
XSI had a lot of great workflows and now, that AD own these for 10 years now, they just did not brought them over. Not speak about that great "Bifrost"-nodal-thingy, which should have been a "replacement" for ICE in Soft. it´s really poor what AD delivers. The EOL for Softimage was commented by Mark Stevens (not at AD anymore by the way..) with the words: "We want to develop better software faster." That´s 5 years ago now.
So happy that I did not stepped into AD´s 2.000 Euro trap. My way is Blender and Houdini. Avoid AD where possible. But see yourself ;) Cheers!

So Viewport 2.0 finally reached version 1.0.. I think Maya's developers must be struggling with the decade old and probably messy software architecture.

Really glad too I got out of maintenance at the right time a few years back with a still "usable" Maya version.. still paying Arnold maintenance though as they make good progress.

It seems they are shrinking the app to just a few workflows, perhaps suggested by big buyers. In Mayan minds, 3d generalist should be doing exactly in same way as a team in big studio, perhaps one task after another. Animation cache in app which already has a best playback on planet (at least when it comes to five or six built-in deformers), together with horrible stiff 90s style deformer chain, practically irreversible setups, cheap and limited stupidities like mash, four or five different and idiotic ways to deal with values. Even they'll add some miracle in 2019.5 or something, by this tempo it will take a 2-3 years to consolidate the addition. For me, time to leave 3d DCC world, slowly but surely.

P.S. just removed Maya section from my site, any mention of that app in signature, anything.

16y too late if I'm right!
In those time, word on the street says "humanity is on path to extinction, need to change and make things right", AD, please keep going continue delivering... nothing valuable and make money this is the most important right?

Sure...render region is there since the beginning of XSI. I was referring to the ownership of all the "patents" concerning Softimage by AD.. ;)

:)) :)) :)) :))

But to add to my comment before, I used a render region plugin for Maya in Maya2015/2016!!!! Written by Arvid Schneider, called arViewportRender.
It had almost all features of the Softimage renderregion. Very useful, and it worked with Arnold as well.

But after all those years, still no replacement for ICE. Nothing special happening with Bifrost, additional functionality was bought into Maya, like MASH and XGen is still a pain to work with on larger projects.
And to top it all of, the latest versions were basically bugfixes. And while there's nothing wrong with that, being on a sub sucks for just bugs that shouldn't be there in the first place......
