Tweaking Houdini's UI colors?

Post by Rork » 30 May 2016, 11:31

Hi all,

As we all (or at least a lot of us) are fiddling with Houdini besides Softimage, we run into things we would like to see differently.
In my case, I would like to edit some of the Houdini UI colors to match up a bit more to Softimage. As I did in Maya. Makes it all less jarring when modeling and selection things ;)

The thread is also running on the Houdini forum: http://www.sidefx.com/forum/topic/44552 ... ost-199590, but I was wondering if people here have ventured into this as well.

There's not much to be found on tweaking the UI of Houdini, and a lot of info is years old.

cheers!

For the color scheme i've personaly started with the "qLib Flat pro" and just hardened the fonts.

Now with the Python interface you linked on the other thread to change the colors of the viewport that's much better.

I just miss some important prefs, like the edge thickness or some sort of Z buffer control because sometimes it's very funky !

Beware of that editor. It deleted my custom setup in the user settings when I started it :\

I haven't looked at the qlib stuff, but what do you mean by hardened the fonts? Made them brighter or something?
I'm fairly happy with the small changes in the colors I made, looks a lot more palatable for the eyes imho.

Houdini is slowly growing on me, despite all kinds of pesky issues LOL!

Here it is working what is described in mentioned thread. It's modified 3DSceneColors.bw together with Houdini Pro scheme, file is placed into windows folder documents\houdini_version\config\ . Not really sure is there something else needed to enable this file in user folder. Been able to modify viewport background color ( it's 'BackgroundColor' and 'BackgroundBottomColor'), selection color and few more, but not to disable 'glow' highlighting in H 15.

@rork I've just made the text darker, the result is a very much XSI UI but with a orange highlight ;-)
PS, the qLib stuff is very great and the doc is well done, don't miss the gallery, there's toons of pre-made tools where you can learn and many examples too.

Speaking about UI, did someone noticed there's a Softimage Skin in blender ???

Yeah there is Softimage theme for Blender for a while, but there's problem that all these buttons in Blender aren't really created with... recognizable design concept in mind. That is, such high contrast from light gray to almost black, really wants to have a dark color precisely localized only on small details, which seems to be possible in Blender only in certain viewport configurations, but not all the time, so imho every ambition with Blender interface ends on almost monochrome theme, like supplied Elsyiun. Anyway once user is focused more on creation, it's usable interface, well with a lot of 'historical' moments, like rectangle selection over list in Bl Outliner, because Outliner was a sort of schematic view, while ago.
