UV's bloating scene file size

Post by mike_b » 20 Aug 2009, 11:20

Have you ever had an issue with a UV map creating massive scene files? Ive been looking at a model of a set one of our guys made, and it was incredibly big file - almost 500Mb!! I pulled it to bits, exporting each mesh as a model and discovered one group of rocks in particular were abnormally large in file size.
So I just loaded that up and went thru it. As soon as I deleted the UV map the model file went from 3Mb to 33k!!
The modeling stack was frozen, and I couldnt see anything else immediately obvious that would cause such a bloated file.
I tried quickly projecting a new UV map onto the mesh, and saved it out - no problem. The model size stayed small.
So there was something wrong with the original UV my guy created, but I dont know how he managed to create such a big file, and how to avoid him doing it again.
Anyone run into this problem before?
Cheers,
Mike

Got some help on this - exporting it out to a dotxsi file reduced it to an acceptable size, without losing the UV information.
Still don't know why it happened tho.

Have the original meshes been imported from another app?
I'm now part of an endangered species...

Nope - they were created in Softimage 7.0

It's a known issue in 7.0 and 7.01. Not sure if it was fixed in 7.5.
Go with exporting to dotxsi, or search xsibase. It has been discussed more than once, with multiple solutions.

Mike,

I had this problem once. My original file was 10Mb, and after I created the UV Layout, the file size was 170Mb!

So, I export all objects in OBJ format and imported in a new scene. It solved my problem.

Cheers.

Thanks for all the help. In the end, exporting out the model solved the issue :) Hopefully we wont have the same issues in 2010
