Export camera (to After Effects)

Post by Lionheart » 20 Feb 2010, 15:09

Is there a way to export the camera data to After Effects from Softimage, as say Cinema 4d

This script exports the camera, lights, nulls, and polygons from XSI to After Effects. From XSI you generate an XML file with the provided script, then import the XML into AE. This script was originally written by Helge Mathee in 2005. I have gone in an made it a little easier to use by automating some of the setup steps.
XSI to AE XML Export ;)

I apologize, I am new to softimage

is there any documentation about how to set this up properly and use it like

the AE Export file goes to the Softimage plugins folder and the XSI_XML_import goes to the after effects scripts folder? is that correct

and then once that works how do you use it ?

thank you for your time

As I don't own After Effects I am unable to test this...
However, the starting comment of the XSI-script seems to be quite clear.
//Select the camera and any nulls, lights, or polygons to export to After Effects.
//Run the script.
//Choose a location to store the XML file
//Run the companion Script: "XSI_XML_import.jsx" in After effects to import the data into After Effects
To run the script, go to the script editor, locate the file and load it and "Choose Edit > Run from the command bar" ;)

Hello, don't know where exactly i've read this but, there is another way to achive this maybe more naturally:
- Use Croswalk to export your cameras/nulls to maya
- Then generate a .ma file
- Import it in AE, he read it natively, done

Well, that would be 'naturally' only if you have Maya, wouldn't it?

I think actually Adobe is the party at fault in this respect. They've had the .ma import option for years now. Too bad .ma is a licensed and (I've been told by Maya-users) semi-obsolete format.

Collada was created as a intermediary 3D fileformat with this type of scenario in mind, XSI supports Collada, After Effects doesn't.
