Windows 10 will be free for Windows 8.1 users for its first year. While there's no word on pricing for users still on Windows 7 or an older version, Microsoft confirmed a while ago that the two most recent Windows versions will be able to upgrade to Windows 10 directly.

Okay, let me answer my own question (if I understand it correctly :D):

It's all in the clumsy wording Microsoft themselves used (and since also have clarified, see my previous post) as to "being free for the first year",
where they apparently meant the upgrade, not the product...
