I was wondering about the Oculus Rift the other day. Would it feasible to use this or similar devices in the domain of augmented and/or virtual reality fad to create content with good-old fashioned Softimage 2015, or would it require too much additional (expensive?) middleware to make the actual magic happen?
In other words: poor hobbyist willing to starve for a new challenge...

Assets can be made in pretty much anything. (Models and simple rigs etc)
Fabric is going to be a very powerful tool for making VR content and its free to get started with so I'd recommend a path of making assets in SI, and making the scenes/ mechanics/ logic in Fabric.
