Grow RigAuthor: Chris Covelli
I'd like to share a little plugin I've been developing over the past year or so, in between jobs. I call it The Grow Rig System, and it's basically a simple auto rigger with a character mesh already attached. Sort of a combination of a rigging tool and a modeling tool.

Here's a demo video.

It's a very simple tool, definitely a work in progress. I've certainly seen more advanced rig builders out there, but I feel the ideas my system centers around are very strong. There are many features I have in mind to add to this system but I must admit my scripting and rigging skills are limited. Any feedback would be a great help, but what I'm really hoping for are any riggers and scripters who would be up for working with me to improve and add to it.

Grow Rig System Beta

Hello,

I'd like to share a little pluggin I've been developing over the past year or so in between jobs. I call it The Grow Rig System, and it's basically a simple auto rigger with a character mesh already attached. Sort of a combination of a rigging tool and a modeling tool.

Here's a demo video:

Here's where to download the files:

So, if you're interested in any capacity whatsoever, feel free to use it, test it, let me know what you think. And again, if you're interested in working on it with me I'd love to hear from you.

Enjoy!

Looks very interesting...
Is it version specific in any way?
(i.e. what is the minimum version of XSI/Softimage to run it successfully?)
Stay safe, sane & healthy!

Looks really interesting, creating the model and final rig and moving the weights over is very nice as well.

cheers for sharing this, specialized rigs like this are very welcome for SI. I can also see a combo of your 'modeling' rig and the GEAR tools as well.

Thanks so much for the comments guys. I appreciate it. :-D

Hirazi - I dont think it really matters what version, since the system mostly uses plain old .emdl model files....the only thing you actually "plug in" is a toolbar with the scripts. It definitely works for versions as far back as 7.1 but i suspect it will work with even older versions as well.

Rork - GEAR is awesome! ALIVE too. I would love to work with people of that caliber to build my system into a more fully featured pluggin. Here's hoping! :-D

thanks! i really like your system's concept, Kyle! :)

Haven't tested it, but i like the style a lot: simple, creative and practical way to work things out.

Hi!
This looks very cool! I´m very busy at the moment, so unfortunately I couldn´t give it a try. But I´ll try to get this thread onto the gallery. Perhaps you can provide some nice screenshot in higher resolution and add them to you post or even send them over directly to me (info@si-community.com). Also post this video at vimeo ;)

best,
oliver

To my knowledge emdl files are not backwards compatible, it looks like you'll need at least 2011.5 to take full advantage of this rig system.

Here's a list of the emdl files and the version they seem to have come from:
  • Models\Rigs\Proportional\Male Biped\Proportional_Rig.emdl - 9.5(2011.5)
    Models\Rigs\Proportional\Female Biped\Proportional_Rig.emdl - 9.5(2011.5)
    Models\Rigs\Animation\Biped\Animation_Rig.emdl - 7.0
    Models\EMDL\Shapes\Male Biped\Male_Biped_Shapes.emdl - 7.0
    Models\EMDL\Shapes\Female Biped\Female_Biped_Shapes.emdl - 7.5

Crap. It seems you are right Mastermind. I will dig around for versions of the proportional models that were created in version 7. Sorry about this guys.

Ok I did find a version of the proportional rigs that were saved out from 7.01. I replaced the whole .rar file with a new one that has the 7.01 models so anyone who was having problems can just re download it. Just remember to clear your browsers cache so youre not just redownloading the older version again.

Thank you Chris, I just tested it in Softimage Mod Tool 7.5 and it worked great. :)

I really, really like the plugin, the concept and the work behind it.
But maybe you should consider to change the music of the demovideo. If you have spoken text, vocal music in the background, particularly this one, ist very distracting... ;)
