SI licences etc.

So from famous webinar I get this conclusion:

New seats of SI licences are available to be purchased until 2016 but with Max, Maya option transfering?
or
New seats of SI licences are available to be purchased to only subscription customers until 2016 but with Max, Maya option transfering?
or
New seats of SI licences are available to be purchased to only customers using SI2010-2014 until 2016 but with Max, Maya option transfering?

Which one is correct? Maybe someone have a final purchasing options in text form, as I am unable to find updated one...Phuh...

It's #3, existing customers, even if they are not on subscription, can buy new seats. The new seats are softimage+maya or softimage+max bundles. people who have never bought softimage before, can't.

How it will be handled second hand selling of licenses? Do Autodesk respect that?

Dammit. I was using XSI mod tool and wanted to get it for a large project I'm landing this year. I have no previous purchases with Autodesk, only Pre-Microsoft SI.

After watching the webinar, I had another question about Softimage licenses too. Being on Subscription, they say I have 2 years to migrate over to Maya or Max. For conversation sake, lets say I do that, but not until maybe later near the beginning of 2016 I decide to make my way over. Lets say at that time I start using Maya until maybe the beginning of 2017, and perhaps at that point I feel that BiFrost never panned out the way I hoped. At that point, I wish to stop my Subscription with Autodesk and decide to look elsewhere. Would I then still be able to access my Softimage license? From everything I have been hearing, unless I am misunderstanding, that if I take the migration package, I will have to remain on Subscription permanently (forever) if I ever want to access Softimage files after the migration period of 2016. Is this correct?

Yes, the Softimage 2015 license you have is permanent. If at the version 2020 of Maya you decide to cancel you your subscription, you will have a permanent license of Maya 2020 forever and a license of Softimage 2015 forever.

Thanks. I appreciate the clarification. They seemed to always say Subscription, so I just wanted to be sure. Thank You.

Yes Rez007.

The license is perpetual.

But this means ongoing license replacement in case of hardware changes as well?

I think so as Licensing does not require Subscription ever to be able to access that from Autodesk. Luc-Eric could probably give you the best answer though.

I would think they would, as DDR4 Ram is do out later this year. There will be a lot of people updating hardware in the next few years.

Yes, this was specifically addressed in the webinar. Autodesk will help you fix your licenses issues after the year 2016, even if you are not on sub, and even for older versions of Autodesk Softimage (like 2010).

Am I correct in understanding that second hand licenses are not an option? I've always thought that Autodesk's policy was that as you buy a license it's non-transferable.

Would it be an option to establish a database of licenses so that people can subcontract or something?

Autodesk have no power about second hand licenses, there was case of someon reselling Autocad they lost.

http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2008 ... -software/

Edit: actualy they not lost at least in US see this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vernor_v._Autodesk,_Inc.

But there is considerable confusion, see this for other cases and UE ruling:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First-sale_doctrine

And also varies a lot by country area legislation.

A couple of things:

Regarding reselling Autodesk software, it seems like the result of the Vernor case is that Autodesk CAN prohibit someone from reselling their software.

Also, be aware that if you don't already own a (commercial?) license of Softimage, you only have until March 27 (8 days from today!) to buy them. This is your last chance. After that, only people who already own a Softimage license will be able to buy more. From the transition FAQ:

7. Can I purchase new seats of Softimage?
As of March 28, 2014 only existing Softimage customers will be able to purchase new or additional seats of Softimage by purchasing either the Maya with Softimage or 3ds Max with Softimage transition offerings. These transition offerings will be available for purchase at the cost of $3,675 US SRP* for the duration of the transition period(approximately two years (see question 5)). These transition offerings will also be available as rental plans for purchase at the cost of $575 US SRP quarterly, or $1,840 US SRP annually. After the two year transition period customers will no longer be able to purchase or rent new Softimage licenses from Autodesk.
