General forum organization

Post by Hirazi Blue » 04 Jun 2009, 14:10

Let's start a thread on the way this forum should be structured...

The first thing that springs to mind when glancing at the way it's structured now,
is that there obviously have to be some other download sections in addition to the ICE downloads...

Well, it all depends on answering one question: does the download-forum have to be functional or complete? What I mean by this is the following: "render tree compounds" would deserve their own little niche in download-land, but I have seen hardly any "render tree compounds" online, ever since they were introduced with version 7.
But well, here goes (to have something to debate):
- compiled plug-ins
- ICE compounds
- RT compounds
- scripts
- written tutorials (as I would imagine, hosting video tutorials is out of the question)

All of these categories (except maybe the RT compounds-section) could easily be split up into subcategories on the basis of their (intended) functionality... But that might be overkill...

To begin with the five subcategories suggested above should suffice. And Forum-categories that do not work can eventually even be closed again... (Never be afraid of drastic change!!!)

Don't forget "Materials", it's a own section. And the "FX-Tree" or "Compositing", what would be better, I guess.

And one point: I think "Modeling" ist the right notation, not "Modelling". :)

Highly debatable, I'm sure: wouldn't it be nice to add a forum for all those Modders/Mod Tool Users out there?

@owei:
Maybe one point: The links in posts should have a better identification. Gray text in combination with black post-text is not optimal, currently. :)

Silly idea: why not "elevate" the "gallery"-bar to become the right side of the header? At least until a final header has been chosen. The way the gallery is placed now, right under the header and not aligned "properly" darkens the top of the page too much in my opinion...

@hirazi
...well...the alignment shows up to be a problem in firefox. try opening in IE ;-)
The darkening aspect is correct. I can leave the bg-color as it is and do not use the black one.
I won´t put the gallery into the banner, because it has not i´ts full width. The gallery should at least fill mostly the full width containing with up to 10 links...

this header is "hardcoded" for now...wold be great if someone could write a little script to automate the task of changing content of the gallery...

thanks..!

The "new" gallery-background looks much better now... :)
About coding the gallery: did you already look for readily-available mods to this board?
